A car accident can cause many types of injury

There is never a good time to be involved in a car accident. Not only can this cause damage to your vehicle, but it can lead to a variety of physical and mental injuries as well.

Since car accidents have the potential to cause serious injury, it’s important to take extra care with your health immediately following a crash. This typically means calling for an ambulance and undergoing a full examination at a local hospital.

Here are some of the most common types of injuries that result from a car accident:

  • Head and back injuries. An example of this would be a concussion, with this one of the most common injuries in a car crash. Any head or back injury can have long-term consequences, so it’s important to receive immediate medical treatment.
  • Chest injuries. These often come into play when the airbag strikes a driver or passenger with extreme force. Chest injuries can range from collapsed lungs to broken ribs. In some of the most serious accidents, a blow to the chest could cause a person to go into cardiac arrest.
  • Broken bones. Any bone in the body can break as the result of a car accident. While some breaks are more serious than others, all of them require immediate and ongoing medical treatment.

While these are among the most common car accident injuries, there are others that could come into play. For example, severed limbs, abrasions, burns and torn ligaments are also common.

In addition to physical injuries, emotional distress can follow a car accident. For example, a serious accident may make it difficult to get behind the wheel again in the future.

Since a car accident can cause so many different types of injury, it’s always a good idea to receive medical attention. Even if you think you’re okay, remember that some injuries don’t present symptoms right away.

Once you have your health under control, you can turn your attention to the cause of the accident and your legal rights. Depending on the circumstances, you may want to consider your many options for receiving compensation.
