With the month of October in full swing, it won’t be long before we are in the middle of the holiday season.
First comes Halloween, with Thanksgiving, Christmas, then New Year’s closely behind.
Like many, you may need to hit the road during the holidays. While some people travel close to home, others drive hundreds of miles to visit with friends and/or family.
There is nothing like a good holiday road trip to cheer you up. However, remember this: An accident can happen at any time. You need to do whatever it takes to remain safe while you’re behind the wheel.
Here are several holiday road trip safety tips to keep in mind:
- Take your vehicle to a mechanic before hitting the road. This will ensure that any potential problems are dealt with before you leave.
- Keep all distractions out of sight. For example, if you know you will use your smartphone, put it in the glove box as you drive. You don’t want to find yourself texting.
- Remind your children to behave themselves in the back seat. You don’t want them to become a distraction.
- Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, as this could come in handy if you break down or are part of an accident.
If you find yourself involved in a motor vehicle accident, you should move your car to safety. You should also call 911, as you want police to arrive so that they can take control of the scene. Of course, an ambulance can also be dispatched if necessary.
Once you have everything taken care of, you can look back at your accident to determine if you’re in position to seek compensation from the negligent party.
